Citizenship Requirements
To register to vote in Arizona, you must be a United States citizen and meet all other voter registration requirements.
Arizona voters may be registered as either full-ballot voters or federal-only voters, depending on whether their U.S. citizenship has been verified.
If you provide valid proof of U.S. citizenship with your voter registration application, or your citizenship is verified through an authorized state or federal record, you may vote in all federal, state, county, and local elections for which you are eligible.
If your U.S. citizenship cannot be verified and you do not provide documentary proof of citizenship, you may be registered as a federal-only voter. Federal-only voters may vote only in federal elections. You may provide valid proof of citizenship to the Mohave County Recorder's Office to become eligible to vote a full ballot in future elections.
Acceptable Proof of Citizenship
Arizona law recognizes several forms of documentary proof of citizenship, including:
- An Arizona driver's license or non-operating identification license issued after October 1, 1996. Provide the license number; do not send the card.
- A legible photocopy of a driver's license or identification card issued by another state that identifies U.S. citizenship.
- A legible photocopy of a U.S. birth certificate.
- A legible photocopy of a U.S. passport or the required passport information.
- U.S. naturalization or citizenship documentation, including a Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship, or the applicable certificate number for verification.
- An Indian Census Number, Bureau of Indian Affairs Card Number, Tribal Treaty Card Number, or Tribal Enrollment Number.
- A Tribal Certificate of Indian Blood or Tribal/Bureau of Indian Affairs Affidavit of Birth.
When a photocopy is required, submit a legible copy rather than the original document. Do not mail original citizenship documents.
If you have previously provided proof of citizenship with an Arizona voter registration and subsequently move within Arizona or update your registration information, you generally do not need to provide proof of citizenship again unless otherwise required.
